Student Computer Laboratories Policy

Procedures

There will be three types of computer laboratories:

  • Type 1:    General purpose, non-bookable computer laboratories, which are accessible during extended hours of operation, funded and managed by ITS, and where students will be able to access the standard software environment.
  • Type 2:    Faculty labs, which may be timetabled, where ITS will provide the servers and standard software, and faculties will be responsible for the desktop environment and laboratory management. There will be facilities for faculties to load specialist software. Where possible these labs should be made available over extended hours.
  • Type 3:    Special purpose labs which are entirely the responsibility of the faculty.
  1. Limited dial-in modem services will be provided to certain categories of students.
  2. Arrangements with external Internet Service Providers will be negotiated whereby students and staff will be offered attractive rates to establish an account.
  3. Given suitable accommodation, network access & wireless points may be provided for student use.
  4. These services will be funded according to the following model:

5.1  Annual allocations of ITS and IT infrastructure funds, consistent with the level of funding for computer laboratories and dial-in services averaged over the previous 2 years, will be allocated as follows:

5.1.1     A fixed amount will be allocated for network servers and physical cabling.
5.1.2     A fixed amount will be allocated for network and standard applications software.
5.1.3     A fixed amount will be allocated to contribute to the total cost of Internet traffic generated from Type 1 computer labs.
5.1.4     A fixed amount will be allocated by means of an open and transparent process, in accordance with the prevailing student access policy, between any of :

  • Type 1 laboratories
  • Dial-in modems for students’ use
  • Network access points
  • Supporting arrangements with external Internet Service Providers

5.2   Faculties will be responsible for:

  • Funding the physical desktop and management of Type 2 labs.
  • The costs associated with Type 3 labs.

The costs of Internet traffic arising from student use of Type 2 and Type 3 laboratories.
