Monash Messaging Service PolicyPlease note that this policy has not yet been revised or converted to the new format . BackgroundA reliable, highly functional and scalable messaging service has an important role in supporting the operations of Monash University. The development of flexible learning and teaching systems within the academic program will depend on the provision of effective systems to provide asynchronous communications systems, such as electronic mail and newsgroups. An effective messaging service underpins the introduction of workflow systems that have the potential to enhance productivity of administrative procedures. These services will operate most effectively where there is uniformity of services operating across the university, and where these can fully integrate with other services such as LDAP directory service, groupware and voice mail. Following extensive evaluations and submissions from the Computer Centre during 1997 and 1998, UNITAC approved the allocation of funds to introduce a university wide messaging service, which has since become known as the Monash Messaging Service. It is intended that these facilities will be the standard messaging service to be used by Monash staff and students. This service has now become a key component of the university’s IT infrastructure and will be funded accordingly to maintain an effective, efficient and reliable service. The intention of this policy is to establish and sustain a University wide messaging service capable of supporting innovative applications that service both academic and administrative purposes, students and staff.
