Information Technology Services Resource Management Policy

1.  Preamble

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a range of resources for use by its clients. These resources include network resources such as message storage space, Novell file storage space, file space on a range of central hosts, network services and Internet bandwidth and traffic quota. Without careful management of these ITS resources, inefficient usage may occur.

2.  Purpose

There are several purposes for this policy:

2.1  To promote cost effective use of IT resources by those within the Monash community.

2.2  To establish finite limits for resource availability for those resources that are centrally managed by ITS.

2.3  To enable realistic capacity planning by ITS in the management of finite or expensive resources.

3.  Responsible Officer

Executive Director, Information Technology Services.

UNITAC.

5.  Policy Scope

The scope of this policy includes all users of ITS resources at Monash University.

6.  Policy

6.1  Information Technology Services (ITS) administers and allocates certain information technology resources.

6.2  Resources provided by ITS will have a finite upper limit for each user.

6.3  Applications for increases in this resource limit shall only be made to ITS through the user's department or faculty.

6.4  ITS shall provide mechanisms and guidelines to assist users in monitoring and managing their resource usage.

6.5  ITS Resources will be provided in conformity to a range of resource specific management plans. ITS is to publicise these plans by way of schedules and these will appear as attachments to the policy document. These plans may be amended or replaced with the approval of the Executive Director, ITS, after consultation with key stakeholders.

6.6  Any associated expenses that are within the scope of this policy may be invoiced for cost recovery purposes by the Director, IT Facilities.

• Applications for increases in resource limits may be made via a published procedure.

• Specific exceptions to this policy will be considered upon application through the above process to the Director-IT Facilities, IT Services.
