Communications Cabling Policy

Communications cabling is the prevalent solution chosen for the delivery of voice and data services to the desktop. Compliance of all communication cabling and installations with office standards is essential for management of the services and their delivery according to published quality of service criteria. Cabling is best viewed as a component of the building infrastructure and, as such, its design and management extend beyond the short term requirements of the immediate users.

Procedures

    1. The scope of this policy includes all cabling (including optical fibre), terminations, racking, interconnection points, housings, reticulation and ancillary equipment required for the purpose of providing the physical connection of communications services.
    2. Special communications cabling that is outside the scope of the specification may be considered upon request to the Manager - Work and Safety.
    3. All communications cabling works associated with building refurbishment, new buildings or new campuses will be charged out of the Division of IT Services. Funds to cover the cost of cabling works are an essential component of budgets and plans for all building works.
    4. Fees will be charged by ITS for new cabling works, including new outlets, relocations and removals.
