Policy Statement

Monash University is committed to identifying and assisting Higher Degree by Research candidates who are at risk of not making satisfactory progress in their research program or not complying with the regulations governing their Higher Degree by Research candidature.

Where intervention proves unsuccessful and a candidate does not make satisfactory progress or does not comply with the relevant University regulations, the University has the right to effect:

  • non-confirmation of candidature, where a candidate is in a period of probationary candidature, leading to exclusion from candidature; or
  • termination of candidature.
If, in any particular case, a candidate’s failure to comply with relevant regulations provides grounds for an allegation of research misconduct under the Discipline Statute, as well as grounds for termination or non-confirmation of candidature under the Candidature Progress Management Regulations, the Research Graduate School Committee will determine which is to apply.

This policy and its supporting procedures:
  • provide a mechanism to identify and support candidates who are experiencing difficulties in their study program;
  • contribute to the maintenance of academic and research quality at the University; and
  • prevent the misuse of academic and research resources which may occur if a candidate who is unable or unwilling to progress remains enrolled at the University.
