Coursework Course Review Policy

Purpose

  • To ensure regular review of academic courses through a systematic framework for assessing the objectives, structure, learning and teaching, management and outcomes of academic programs leading to a Monash award.
  • To provide a framework for evaluating courses against the university’s quality cycle to ensure monitoring, improvement and re-approval of the university’s education programs, and formal reporting of these processes.

Scope

All coursework courses.
For each course, outcomes in relation to the criteria for course approval, including the strategic case, the academic case and the business case.

Policy Statement

The guiding principles for review are based on the university’s quality cycle of Plan, Act, Evaluate (monitor and review) and Improve. Course reviews ensure that the university’s education programs are subject to regular and systematic evaluation and internal reaccreditation.

Each of the university’s courses will be reviewed by an external panel at least every five years, although a shorter review cycle may be employed for strategic or operational reasons. Where a course has been reviewed under the auspices of an Academic Review, this meets the requirement of the review cycle. Faculties may choose to review a suite of cognate courses under a single overarching review.

Where a course involves collaboration with a transnational partner institution, it may be advantageous to align the review cycle with the Review Processes for Transnational Collaborative Coursework Arrangements. Faculties may also choose to align the timing of course reviews with professional or reaccreditation reviews by external bodies where applicable.

Courses will be reviewed against the university criteria for obtaining course approval by assessing the extent to which the course has met its strategic, academic and business objectives and addressed compliance protocols.

Course reviews will comprise the following stages as detailed in the Procedures:

  • Self-review and preparation of self-review report;
  • Call for submissions;
  • Review and preparation of review report;
  • Preparation of action plan;
  • Submission of course to the relevant faculty board for re-approval;
  • Report on implementation of recommendations 12 months after lodgement of the review report and action plan.

A central database will be maintained of course reviews, action plans and 12-month follow-up reports on implementation of recommendations.
