Professional Master by Coursework

Schedule of Qualification Categories

Entrance Level

The normal requirement for admission is a bachelor degree, and work experience.

Individual faculties retain the prerogative to determine the extent of recognition of prior learning which may be credited towards specified programs.

Duration

At least 48 credit points or two standard semesters equivalent.

Such courses generally are determined by outcomes, rather than duration or entry level.

Exit Standard

Professional masters programs generally provide a practically oriented advanced program in a specific area of study that meets the needs of the participants and their workplaces. Some professional courses offer accreditation for practice. They vary in the extent to which they build directly on undergraduate programs.

To achieve the required outcome, the degrees need to be structured so that the students achieve:

  • At least 24 credit points of subjects completed at fifth year level, and
  • Either 24 credit points at a genuine fourth year level or higher, or 12 credit points at a genuine fifth year and 12 credit points in advanced accelerated learning subjects (that build on earlier accelerated learning subjects),
  • Of these 48 credit points, at least 24 credit points at genuine fifth year level specialising in a particular discipline.

Successful completion of a Professional Master by Coursework would not normally enable admission to a PhD.
