Master by Coursework

Schedule of Qualification Categories

Entrance Level

The normal requirement for admission is a relevant bachelor degree or equivalent.

Articulation options (with up to full credit granted) may be available from a relevant graduate/postgraduate certificate or graduate/postgraduate diploma.

Duration

The minimum duration is:

  • Two standard semesters full-time equivalent (48 credit points) following a relevant (four year) undergraduate degree, or
  • Three semesters full-time equivalent (72 credit points) following a relevant (three year) undergraduate bachelor.

Additional coursework of one to two semesters (24-48 credit points) is required, depending on the requirements of the discipline area, where entry is from an undergraduate degree that does not provide an appropriate academic foundation.

Exceptions to the requirements of Master by Coursework are considered on a case by case basis, taking into account market forces and comparability with other peer institutions.

Exit Standard

Masters Degrees by coursework generally offer the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and understanding of a particular field through a structured program of learning activities, and to develop skills within this area of study.

The main types of coursework masters programs are:

  • Focussed on a single discipline or area of study, building directly on an undergraduate course of study in that discipline or area of study, or occasionally in a closely related discipline or area of study;
  • Interdisciplinary courses which integrate the perspectives of several traditional disciplines or areas of study, any of which offers an appropriate preparation for the course.

These degrees do not include a major research component, but may involve a project or ‘minor thesis’ that allows the student to become familiar with research methodologies in the area and provides a limited opportunity for putting them into practice.  At Monash, coursework Masters Degrees normally involve the completion of coursework subjects that represent no less than 50% of the requirements of the course.

Exit awards options of the relevant graduate/postgraduate certificate or graduate/postgraduate diploma may be available provided the course requirements are satisfied.
