Higher Doctorate

Entrance Standard

In order to qualify for admission, a Higher Doctorate applicant must:

  • Have qualified, not less than seven years previously, for a degree of the university;
  • Be a current member of the Monash teaching or research staff, and have been so for not less than six consecutive years full-time equivalent; or
  • Have qualified, not less than seven years previously for a degree of another educational institution and have had a close research association with the university for not less than six years.

Duration

The Higher Doctorate is normally awarded based on the examination of materials submitted to the appropriate faculty board, after a designated period of time has elapsed since the undergraduate degree was completed. Candidates for the Higher Doctorate do not enrol in a course.

Exit Standard

At this level, examiners shall certify to the faculty board concerned that the published work:

  • Makes an original, substantial and distinguished contribution to the knowledge in the field concerned; and
  • Gives the applicant authoritative standing in the field and the right to general recognition of this standing by scholars in the field.

A panel of examiners examines these works and a determination is made regarding the candidates suitability for the award of the Higher Doctorate.
