Qualification Categories Policy

Establishing and Amending Monash Qualification Categories

These procedures outline the process required for the establishment, or subsequent amendment, to the Monash Qualification categories.

1. Proposals for the establishment or amendment of Monash qualification categories must have clear rationale statements, outlining the:

• proposed entrance and exit standards;
• duration;
• credit points required;
• relationship of the proposed new qualification category to other Monash qualification categories and to the Australian Qualifications Framework.

2. An establishment or amendment proposal is submitted  to either the University’s Education Committee or the Monash Research Graduate School, as appropriate, who will consider whether the establishment proposal:

• is of an appropriate academic standard;
• is consistent with the Qualification Categories Policy and Schedule of Qualification Categories;
• provides a strong rationale for the establishment of the qualification.

3. The Academic Board reviews recommendations from Education Committee or the Monash Research Graduate School, as appropriate. The Academic Board will may decide that the proposal:

• has been unsuccessful;
• requires further clarification and resubmission to Education Committee, Monash Research Graduate School or Academic Board;
• will be endorsed and sent to university Council for final approval.

An extract of the minutes will be sent to the proposing faculty and the Chair Education Committee or MRGS (as appropriate) advising of the outcome of the proposal.

4. The university Council will consider whether to approve the establishment or amendment, to an award category.

An extract of the minutes of Council outlining the outcome of the proposal will be sent to the faculty and the Chair of Education Committee or MRGS, as appropriate.

5. If a new or amended qualification category is approved, the Qualification Categories policy and Schedule of Qualification Categories will be updated to reflect Council’s decision.

Disestablishing Monash Qualification Categories

These procedures outline the process required for the disestablishment of Monash Qualification categories.

1. Proposals for the disestablishment of qualification categories must have clear rationale statements, which include information on the:

• consideration of the relationship between the qualification category considered for disestablishment and other Monash qualification categories;
• impact on nested programs and credit transfer arrangements;
• replacement qualification category (if any).

2. The disestablishment proposal is submitted to either the University’s Education Committee or the Monash Research Graduate School, as appropriate, who will consider whether the disestablishment proposal provides:

• a strong rationale for the disestablishment of the qualification;
• an impact statement outlining other qualifications, nested programs and credit transfer arrangements which may be affected.
