Qualification Categories Policy

Purpose

To specify entrance and exit standards, duration and credit points for all qualifications categories offered by Monash University, as approved by University Council.

Scope

All Monash qualifications categories

Policy Statement

All Monash awards must meet the entrance level, duration and exit standard as set out in the Schedule of Qualification Categories.

Monash qualification categories are generally consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework. Monash University offers the following qualification categories:

Higher Degrees by Research

Higher Doctorate

Doctor of Philosophy

Doctor of Medicine

Professional Doctorate

Master by Research

Coursework Programs

Master (Honours)

Master by Coursework

Postgraduate Diploma

Postgraduate Certificate

Graduate Diploma

Graduate Certificate

Honours Bachelor degree

Bachelor degree with Honours

Bachelor

Non-Award Programs

Faculty Certificates

Monash provides a range of pathways across both undergraduate and postgraduate offerings using credit transfer and recognition of prior learning arrangements.

Responsibility for implementation

• University Council - approval of all qualification categories.
• Academic Board - review of recommendations from Education Committee or Monash Research Graduate School for the establishment, amendment and disestablishment of qualification categories.
• Education Committee - review of proposals submitted to establish, amend or disestablish coursework qualification categories.
• Research Graduate School - review of proposals submitted to establish, amend or disestablish research qualification categories.

Definitions

Qualifications Category: A generic name for a particular level of academic study leading to a qualification. Each qualification category has specific entrance and exit standards, duration and credit points.

Qualification: A degree, diploma or certificate comprising approved Monash study.
